You become what you worship
You become what you worship is a phrase often used by Bill Johnson in his teachings, and I certainly have seen it become true in people’s lives.
The awe you feel toward someone or something will, in time, lead you into wonder and wonder isn’t passive—it draws you in. It invites you to get close, to observe, to participate. Eventually, it asks for transformation.
I’ve always carried a quiet awe for a few women in my life. Back in my teenage years, I might’ve seen them as ordinary or out of touch, not trendy or loud enough to catch attention. But now, I see them for who they truly are: wise.
They don’t speak just to fill silence—they speak only after listening to the Spirit. Once soft and uncertain, they’ve grown into women of deep strength and unshakable values. I’m in awe of them.
From how they carry themselves with quiet dignity
to the way their words carry weight without needing volume— not a day goes by that I don’t think of the women whose shoulders I now stand on.
They’ve known loss and defeat. They’ve walked through battles that nearly broke them. But they don’t lose anymore—because they’ve come into the sacred knowing that they were created to overcome. And now, they live like it.
I first met them when I wasn’t yet one of them. We talked. They shared wisdom I didn’t always understand. But something in me knew to stay. I stayed near their presence, their peace, their grace. They never forced decisions on me. They didn’t control or command. Instead, they showed me what it looks like to live with intention. They led not with pressure—but with presence. They loved well and taught me how to love with courage. They weathered storms and showed me that storms don’t get the final say. They forgave deeply and showed me that forgiveness isn’t weakness—it’s freedom. They believed they can decide well and I started making quality decisions too. They embraced their own stories, and in seeing that, I gave me permission to embrace mine.
They believed restoration was possible for them and because they believed, My life got restored too.
And now I understand something I couldn’t back then:
What you’re in awe of, you lean toward.
What captures your wonder begins to shape your soul.
Eventually, you become what you worship.
So I guard what holds my awe.
I pay attention to who and what pulls at my wonder,
because that is what I will become.
What are you in awe of?
